Drop Side Crib Recall - 2 Million More!!

Over 2 Million Cribs Recalled Amid Safety Concerns
More than 2 million cribs recalled over entrapment, suffocation risk

More than 2 million cribs from Evenflo, Delta Enterprise Corp. and five other companies were recalled Thursday amid concerns that babies can suffocate, become trapped or fall from the cribs.

This undated handout photo provided by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) shows a Delta crib. More than 2 million cribs from seven companies were recalled Thursday amid concerns that babies can suffocate, become trapped or fall from the cribs. (AP Photo/CPSC) (AP)
Most of the cribs were drop-sides, which have a side rail that moves up and down so parents can lift children from them more easily. That movable side, however, can malfunction or detach from the crib, creating a dangerous gap where babies' heads can become trapped, leading to suffocation or strangulation.
The other companies involved in the recall were Child Craft, Jardine Enterprises, LaJobi, Million Dollar Baby and Simmons Juvenile Products.
No deaths were linked to the recalled cribs, but there were more than 250 reports of drop-sides detaching or failing and at least 16 entrapments of infants. In one case, a child was found unconscious and later hospitalized.
In the announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, all seven companies recalled drop-side cribs. Delta and Child Craft also acknowledged problems with fixed-side cribs.
Drop-sides have increasingly come under scrutiny, with several warnings from the CPSC in the last year that the cribs can be deadly. CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum has pledged to ban their manufacture and sale by year's end.
"This new recall announcement is part of a larger effort by CPSC to clean up the marketplace from many of these unsafe cribs," said Tenenbaum. "Most of these recalled cribs have dangerous drop-sides, while the Delta crib can pose a danger to babies if the mattress support is installed incorrectly."

Chicago Leads The Way in Car Seat Regulations !!

Retailers required to post child safety seat guidelines under proposal
Chicago stores that sell child safety seats would be required to post city guidelines that help parents determine the age-appropriate seat to buy — and refer them to trained installers — under an ordinance advanced June 1 over retailers’ objections.
More than 80 percent of child safety seats for cars are installed incorrectly and some are not age-appropriate, experts claim. With hundreds of different car and seat models, there is “no one way” to install a child safety seat correctly.
The guidelines approved by the City Council’s Health Committee would have to be posted within 20 feet of any child safety seat offered for sale. They would refer parents to a Web site that includes the names of experts who assist parents with the proper installation of child safety seats.
Retailers that fail to post the guidelines would get a warning notice. Repeat offenders would face fines ranging from $50 to $500.

Safe Sleep Advisory for Babies

Creating a safe sleep environment for baby is the best thing you can do to ensure the first years are happy and healthy. Raising your bundle of joy takes care and knowledge. Being more aware of the products in and around your home is just another step that will become second nature as baby grows.
Each year hundreds of deaths occur when children are placed in a sleep environment that is not specifically designed for children. The safest place for a child is in a fully functional, properly assembled crib. It's also important to remember these basic guidelines to create a safe sleep environment for your baby:
For the safest product use, be sure to always read and follow all manufacturers' instructions.
It is recommended second-hand products should not be used for baby. However, if it is imperative to use older products, make sure they have all of the current safety features and have not been recalled.
Keep in mind that new products meeting current safety standards are the safest option.
Don't forget to frequently inspect products for missing hardware, loose threads and strings, holes and tears.
While every family is unique, it’s best to determine your best sleep plan and what’s right for your entire family. The practice of cosleeping, or sharing a bed with your infant, is controversial, a personal decision and one that should not be taken lightly. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons and consider room sharing as a safer alternative.
With some careful planning, naptime and nighttime can be a pleasant experience for both you and your baby. Make every night a safe night!

Sheryl Crow Talk About Adding a Second Baby
"Easier Going with Baby No. 2"

With two busy boys Sheryl Crow has her hands full, but she says she’s enjoying every single moment of motherhood — especially after learning some valuable parenting pointers the first time around.
“I’m not sweating the small stuff,” the singer — who’s mom to Wyatt Steven, 3, and
newly adopted son Levi James, 6 weeks — “I’m easier going.”
Instead of worrying about the little things like she did before, Crow, 48, now knows that “every little tiny gurgle” doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong and if her son doesn’t eat, it simply means he just wasn’t hungry.
“I’m applying all the mistakes I made with Wyatt to being more relaxed with Levi,” she says.
Though adding Levi to the Crow clan was exciting news the singer
couldn’t wait to share with fans, she acknowledges having two kids is more than just double the work.
“One is one and two is twenty,” she laughs. “I can’t believe how much stuff is needed for two kids! We’re getting ready to go on the road in a couple of days and I don’t think there’s going to be any room on the bus for my stuff.”
